powerful, unlikely surprises that sneak up on, and from, you
|
From the moment you walk in, you’ll find Fearless Writing™ is
energizing, contradictory, and full of surprises and insights. Both gentle and
challenging; it manages to be highly interactive and at the same time,
very private. The tone is lighthearted; there's depth and intense
focus. And although there's a definite progression in understanding the
writing process, and a lot of group activities, the experience remains at its core driven by the individual needs, goals, and
aspirations of participants. The group --- rarely fewer than
10 participants, rarely more than 25 --- is large enough to offer
a variety of perspectives, experience, styles, and working problems,
small enough to be intimate.

the Fearless process: unique among writing
workshops
|
|
Each person, and the powerful process of self-understanding which
naturally develops, is deeply respected. Reading out loud is encouraged,
but optional. There is no “hot seat”. No one is ever made to do
anything. In contrast to the typical "workshopping" popularized
by the Iowa Writers' Workshop and other writers' conferences,
there is no group critique of work done prior to or outside of class,
nor is there a focus on one particular genre, such as poetry or
non-fiction. Yet you will be challenged, invited to push yourself, and
inspired, but never, ever forced. All this combines to catapult you into new ways of thinking, acting, and writing.
|
" Most workshops use sleight of hand: you get it until you get home,
then old habits and inhibitions resume. The power and impact of Fearless
Writing lasts. It left me fired up, inspired, armed with the tools and
practice, in touch with what I know. Not once did we hear about CD's
accomplishments. Instead, she listened, responded, made us see for
ourselves what worked and didn't. Gentle guidance; dramatic impact."

the sessions, and what you need to participate
|
Sessions consist of informal lecture-discussions, and extensive in-class
writing exercises (a few done as a
group, but most individual).
These sessions take place over a period of time ranging from a weekend
intensive to a more leisurely weeklong experience, either in the U.S. or
abroad. Sometimes these are combined with meals, or even substantial travel and other elements of learning and exploration, as
in the upcoming Fearless in Italy workshops
(some cheerful Fearless writers
last winter in Italy, left).
Aside from a few simple materials
and a willingness to show up, not much is required. We
work off a series of hand-out materials developed by Crescent ,
given out gradually as we progress. Only a small amount of time is spent
on the how-to's of publication; Fearless Writing™ is largely
oriented towards the practice of writing more effectively and easily.

|
p.s. if you think you can't write or are scared to participate
|
The only people
Crescent loves to teach Fearless to more than writers are would-be
writers, blocked writers, those who think they can't write, and those
who have always written secretly but never shown their work to anyone.
No degrees or literary background are required. Fearless has been taken
by people as young as 16 and as old as 85; by farmers, published and
unpublished writers, visual artists, musicians, doctors, truck drivers,
politicians, housewives, advertising executives, entrepreneurs, editors,
and even one delightful down-home celebrity who you'd think wouldn't
need to take a course in Fearless anything, or any other subject (Julia
Child), Just show up and see what happens. Still intimidated? Get
this: Crescent Dragonwagon
is a high school drop-out (no kidding. She did the front half on tenth
grade three times).
